This winter, explore all the La Porte County Public Library has to offer! From holiday-themed events to enrolling in the Winter Reading Program, there are endless opportunities for people of all ages to learn, grow, showcase creativity and embrace the winter season.
The LPCPL has materials to check out that make the perfect indoor activities for a snowy day. From holiday classics to cookbooks and books featuring diverse holidays from around the world, there is something for everyone. Not only are there a wide variety of books, movies and magazines available, but there are also maker carts, STEAM kits, sharing kits, puzzles, and games that provide educational and entertainment value to both children and families.
There is no better time than the cold, wintry season to bundle up with a good book. To encourage literacy year-round, enroll in the Winter Reading Program. Everyone ages 0-99 is eligible to participate! The reading challenge runs from Monday, January 15th through Thursday, February 29th.
The theme is “Discover the Solar Eclipse” and readers who complete the program will receive their own eclipse glasses, just in time for the solar eclipse set to take place on Monday, April 8th.
For those looking to get crafty this holiday season, LPCPL has upcoming classes for you to learn how to make your customized decorations for your home.
There are two opportunities this month to learn how to make Cricut garland. The first Make It! Class is tomorrow, December 5th at the Union Mills Branch from 2-4 p.m. and at the LPCPL Exchange on December 15th from 4-5:30 p.m.
If you’re looking for a personalized ornament to add to your Christmas tree, the Make It! Wood Turned Ornament class taking place on December 13th from 10-12 p.m. at the LPCPL Exchange is a great opportunity to make your own. Practice following a pattern and transform wood blanks into a tree, snowman, or light.

Upcoming Family Fun Events:
Stop by the Main Library next Monday, December 11th from 6-7 p.m. for the Silly Safari: Live Reindeer Meet and Greet. This family-fun photo op is the perfect way to get in the holiday spirit. It takes place in the Reading Wi-Fi Garden, so be sure to dress for the weather and prepare to stand in line for a photo with a live reindeer. There will be a hot cocoa station and take-and-go coloring and activity pages available.
Make handprint pigeon ornaments, read along to Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Sleigh by Mo Willems and sip on some hot cocoa at the Hanna Branch Holiday Pigeon Party on Thursday, December 14th from 4-5:30 p.m.
There are also two chances to see members of the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra at the library this month. Storytime with the Symphony takes place on Thursday, December 14th from 7-8 p.m. at the Coolspring Branch and at Main on Monday, December 18th from 6-7 p.m.
