31 Aug Spark Labs Launches Open Lab Hours
Starting Friday, September 1, 2017, Spark Labs will host open lab hours at the Main Library. We are excited to provide this space where people of all ages can get together and informally learn STEAM related technologies. It’s a great opportunity to learn new skills and gain hands on experience by sharing tools, knowledge, and local expertise.
Questions? Here are important things you need to know.
When are open lab hours?
- Mondays 1-7pm
- Thursdays 1-7pm
- Fridays 1-5:30pm
- First Saturday of the month 9-4:30
Times and dates are also listed on the Library’s online Events calendar.
Who can use Spark Labs during open lab hours?
Any member of the community who becomes a Spark Labs Official Maker can work independently in the makerspace. Makers must be 13 years or older with a library account or current photo ID.
How do I become a Maker?
Before participating in open labs hours, all Makers must take the Spark Labs Official Maker course and pass a quiz. This course is available in the Tutorials tab found on the right hand side of the Library’s website.
What do I need to do after completing the Maker course?
When Makers visit open lab for the first time, they will meet with a staff person and present their printed quiz score. The Maker will then review the Spark Labs Policy with staff, and sign a waiver. All adults Makers will sign a waiver, and minors ages 13-17 must have a waiver on file signed by a parent or guardian.
Note that some equipment will require additional training before use. Currently, these include the 3D printer, soldering kits, and Cricut cutter. Look for these training courses in the same Tutorials tab on the Library website.
