National Nutrition Month® is an annual campaign that focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and quality eating habits. Nutrition and physical activity go hand in hand to lead a healthy lifestyle. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics expanded its “National Nutrition Week” which started in 1973 to a month-long observance in 1980 to promote the initiatives of healthy eating and physical activity. The theme for this year is “Personalize Your Plate.”
Four main principles surround National Nutrition Month®
- Eat a variety of nutritious foods every day
- Plan your meals each week
- Prepare and create meals
- Visit a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
What can you do to focus on nutritious food choices and leading a healthy lifestyle? First, be sure to include healthy foods from all food groups in your daily meals. Using the tool Choose MyPlate will help you to select items for meals from all of the food groups. This tool can be used to create meal plans to help stay on track with your focus. Meal planning and creating a grocery list helps you to continue to choose healthy food while you are shopping. Finding cookbooks and nutrition resources with La Porte County Public Library will also help you to make healthier choices. The Library also offers events that are focused on health and wellness, and Health Literacy Kits you can check out to aid in your physical activities.
