eResources FAQs

What is a Database? What would I use it for?

A database is a collection of information that can be accessed online. Many contain articles and information published elsewhere, such as newspapers and magazines. Because that information is then placed online, databases are a great way to access up to date, accurate information 24/7, from any location. We recommend them for research, homework, and interactive learning.

Can I use your Databases from Home?

Most of our databases are available to you anywhere with an internet connection by using your library card number and password. A few are available only in our library buildings.

What kind of information do the databases have?

You can browse through our full list of databases, which include magazine and newspaper articles as well as encyclopedias and research books. These include many fabulous resources for homework for K-12 and college students. We also have specialty databases for genealogy research like Heritage Quest; language learning from Rocket™ Languages; and online classes on a wide variety of topics from Gale Courses.

How Can I Borrow eBooks or eMagazines from the Library?

To borrow electronic materials, you will need to a library card and password.

If you don’t have a library card, you can get one at any library location. If you have a card but no password, please contact us for assistance.

Once you have your library card and password, you can get started at our Downloads page. We recommend installing the OverDrive app (for books) and the Flipster app (for magazines) for the best reading or listening experience.

We’re happy to help you get started in person, via email, or over the phone at Main Library’s Computer Lab or any library location. You also can visit OverDrive’s or  Flipster’s help sites for step by step instructions on getting started.

What Devices Work with your eBooks and Magazines?

Most major devices will work, including Kindles, iPads, iPhones, Androids, Chromebooks, desktop computers, and smart phones.

To get started with your device in OverDrive, check out their complete list of compatible devices. Flipster also offers user guides and tutorials for desktops, iPads, iPhones, Androids, and Kindles.

What kind of eBooks do you have available?

We offer eBooks in print and eAudiobooks for adults, teens, and kids, in a wide range of genres, and we regularly add new titles to the collection. If you don’t find quite what you’re looking for after browsing our site, you can suggest titles for us to consider purchasing for the collection.
