Update on Our Public Computer Services

29 Jul Update on Our Public Computer Services

Do you need to get online at the library? Then you should consider trying out a Chromebook. All of our library service locations have added the option of Chromebooks which library card holders 18 and older can check out for 1 hour at a time. The Chromebooks offer the flexibility of sitting anywhere within the library while you are online.

Chromebooks are a little different than a standard laptop or PC. Chromebooks do not have installed software. Instead, they can be used to browse the Internet, check email online, or access social media, and much more.

To create documents, spreadsheets, or presentations, you need to be online and use a service such as Google Drive (for Docs / Sheets / Slides) or Microsoft’s free cloud based service for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Any of these documents or spreadsheets can be downloaded and saved to a portable storage device such as a flashdrive.

Chromebooks are an excellent option if you want a quiet place to work other than the public Computer Lounge area. You could reserve a Study Room or Meeting Room to work or make a Skype call or attend an online webinar/training. The Main Library also has a Quiet Reading Room  as well as the Indiana Room, both of which are great, quiet places to work.

Stop by any of our library service locations and find out more about Chromebooks and how you might use them. We are excited to offer this new service to you!
