Sherman Alexie: A Storyteller You Should Know

10 Jun Sherman Alexie: A Storyteller You Should Know

And who will not be ignored.

Poet, Filmmaker, Novelist, and now bestselling children’s author Sherman Alexie has been on the literary scene for a while now.  If you haven’t read anything by him yet, you are truly missing out. Now is a great time to get to know his works if you haven’t already.

His new picture book, Thunder Boy Jr. is already a bestseller.  Alexie, doesn’t hold back any of his powerful storytelling abilities for this new and younger audience.  Thunder Boy Jr., written by Alexie and illustrated by Yuyi Morales is entertaining, heartfelt, and humorous.  Thunder Boy Jr. is about a boy who is not fond of his hand-me-down name. In fact, he HATES it! He feels the nickname “Little Thunder” does not sound cool or celebrate his own special accomplishments, like braving an orca whale or garage sale hopping.

Sherman Alexie, a father of two teenage boys, remembers reading picture books to his sons. The connection kids have to their favorite picture books can last a lifetime. However, he points out there is a major lack of brown skin protagonists in the picture book world. Luckily for us, this contributed to Alexie writing one. Hopefully we will see more of this character, Thunder Boy Jr., but in the meantime check out Thunder Boy Jr. written by Sherman Alexie and illustrated by Yuyi Morales.
