06 Jan Review: Lunar Chronicles Series
I have always enjoyed young adult (YA) literature and fantasy novels. I also appreciate authors who can cleverly weave a fresh telling of traditional fairy tales. Therefore, I was delighted when I finally took the plunge and listened to Marissa Meyer’s Cinder, book 1 of the Lunar Chronicles. The narrator has a wonderful voice range, able to make the main character voices distinct from one another and convey a depth of emotion I appreciated. As for the stories themselves, each of the five titles is a twist on a different fairy tale. Each novel builds on and intertwines with the previous one, so it is definitely better read them in order. The series’ overarching story takes place several hundred years in the future. It centers around a girl named Cinder and the need to thwart a lunar monarchy with designs on ruling Earth with plenty of romance and action along the way. Reading order is Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, Fairest, and Winter. Stars Above is a bonus collection of short stories.
