18 Apr New in 2018 – Check out a STEAM Kit
You asked. We listened. You can now check out STEAM kits for up to 6 weeks of inventing, tinkering, and learning! Thanks to a grant from the Unity Foundation of La Porte County, LPCPL is piloting this new collection that includes a mixture of high and low tech STEAM kits.
What is a STEAM kit?

If the kit has a black luggage tag, all needed supplies are included in the kit. STEAM kits are shelved in the Youth Services area at the Main Library in La Porte.
Why does STEAM education matter?
Three years ago, La Porte County Public Library started Spark Labs to address the need for STEAM education in La Porte County. Spark Labs is a makerspace where people of all ages can come to learn through hands-on experiences and sharing of tools, knowledge, and local know how at the library or through mobile Spark Labs classes at schools and community centers. STEAM skills ensure La Porte County students and workers can compete in the transforming education landscape and skills-based economy.
Spark Labs classes are very popular (in 2017 we reached over 4,600 people in La Porte County with Spark Labs technology!) By checking out a STEAM kit, cardholders can build the skills they want to learn with adequate time to develop more skills than they could in a one hour class. Additionally, organizations can borrow STEAM kits to use at an afterschool club or community group without requiring a Library Instructor to always be present. Check out a STEAM kit and learn something new!
