31 May Kindergarten Readiness
Getting ready for kindergarten can be a fun and rewarding experience, especially when parents and families are provided with correct information on how to prepare themselves and their children. The La Porte County Public Library is an excellent place to begin asking questions and conducting research! Two of the books we offer on the topic include What Your Kindergartener Needs to Know: Preparing Your Child For A Lifetime Of Learning and Education a la Cart: Choosing The Best Schooling Options For Your Child.
Another resource available to help you and your child make the move to kindergarten easier is the Indiana Department of Education website which is full of information about kindergarten in Indiana. While some of the information is directed towards teachers and schools, much of it is helpful to families. For instance, you can find easy-to-understand kindergarten readiness checklists for different subjects on the site. There is also information specifically for English Language Learners, including a home language toolkit and several sources showing what requirements a school must meet to provide students learning English with high-quality instruction. You can also research the benefits of full-day kindergarten and can enter your address into a search engine to find your local public library.
Remember, it is never too early to encourage your child’s love of learning! This summer is a great time to start. Our weekly Stories & More and Play & Learn classes help you and your child get ready for kindergarten success. Check our online calendar for these events and our new Blast off into Preschool Series coming later this summer.
