Main Library History
Library services have been available in La Porte County since 1834—the same year Abraham Lincoln entered politics in Illinois, Cyrus McCormick patented his reaping machine, Braille gained worldwide acceptance and sardines were canned for the first time in Europe. Since that time, library services have continued to evolve and grow. In 1982, the La Porte Public Library merged with the La Porte County Contractual Library to form the La Porte County Public Library system. The Main Library, six branches, the LPCPL Exchange a mobile library and a mobile classroom now serve 17 of the 21 town ships in the county.
In 1915 it was clear more space was a necessity for the Library. Successful application was made to the Carnegie Foundation for funds to erect a new library building, and in 1920, the new library opened its doors at the corner of Indiana and Maple Avenues. Since that time several additions to the building were made to deliver services. These renovations ensure the library is now better equipped to serve the community for years to come.
